Getting to Guardavalle Marina

Guardavalle has its own railway station, in the Marina area, on the Ionian line between Santa Caterina dello Jonio and Monasterace-Stilo. Trenitalia regional trains stop here: northbound you reach Soverato in about twenty minutes and Catanzaro Lido in about an hour, southbound the Locride and Reggio Calabria.

From northern Italy the easiest route is the high-speed line down the Tyrrhenian coast to Lamezia Terme Centrale, then a regional train via Catanzaro Lido and a connection on the Ionian line. Alternatively there is the integrated Ionio-Tirreno link: train to Rosarno, then an Autolinee Federico coach, bookable through Trenitalia, to Gioiosa Jonica, from where you ride back up by regional train.

Electrification works funded by Italy's recovery plan are ongoing on the Ionian line: before travelling, check timetables and possible replacement buses on Trenitalia.

The reference airport is Lamezia Terme (SUF), Calabria's main hub: about 75 km and an hour and a quarter by car. The alternatives are Crotone (95 km) and Reggio Calabria (133 km).

From Lamezia, if you do not rent a car, an Autolinee Federico coach links the airport with the Ionian coast and also stops at Guardavalle: about four runs a day, an hour and three quarters of travel. A night run in the opposite direction serves morning flights.

The SS106 Ionian road runs through Guardavalle Marina. From the north: A2 motorway to the Lamezia Terme-Catanzaro exit, then the SS280 to Catanzaro Lido and the SS106 southwards past Soverato. From the south: A2 to Rosarno, then the SS682 cross road to Marina di Gioiosa and the SS106 northwards.

The SS106 is mostly single carriageway: in summer allow a few extra minutes.
