The classic week: the sea every morning and the best of the Ionian coast, from Kaulon to Gerace.
Seven days based at the Marina: the sea in the morning, villages and Magna Graecia sites in the afternoon, with a single full day out. No stop is more than an hour's drive away: that is the advantage of this spot at the southern tip of the province of Catanzaro, on the border with the Locride.
Day 1
A first swim: the beach is a five-minute walk away, with a gently sloping seabed, long free stretches and the protected dunes behind. In the evening, the promenade.
Day 2
Morning on the beach, then eight minutes away the Achaean colony at Punta Stilo: Doric temple, baths and the mosaic of dragons and dolphins, with the museum next to the digs.

Day 3
An afternoon in Tommaso Campanella's village, one of Italy's most beautiful: the five-domed Byzantine Cattolica is worth the trip on its own.

Day 4
A full day. In the morning the archaeological park of Locri Epizefiri, with its 4th century BC theatre; then up to Gerace, ten kilometres further, where the Norman cathedral is the largest church in Calabria.

Day 5
After the beach, late afternoon in Badolato old town: stacked houses, thirteen churches and cobbled lanes that light up in the low sun.
Day 6
A swim in the sheltered Seahorse Bay and an afternoon in the Pearl of the Ionian among shops and promenade; in the cathedral, Antonello Gagini's 1521 Pietà.
Day 7
No car today: beach, one last swim, and the suitcase gets packed at leisure.
